class on 12/ 11

Today's class, we went through yesterday's test questions again. And this time, I know most answers of these questions, I don't know why. But this time, I learnt that before the test, we need to put all of our effort on it, and try to figure out all the questions. Ask someone with experiences and learn from them. That is what I should do next exam.

class on 12 10

Today's class, we had a big test again, I swear that I spent a lot of time to review for the test last night. But I don't know why I cannot get a high score. Maybe I need to spend more time and try to understand it but not just try to remember. I will try my best on the Mid-term Exam.

class on Dec 4

At the beginning of today's class, Mr. Schick showed us some of his products, that is amazing, we are all proud of him. And I really like the song which wrote by him "Slumdog ". This is the song which he wrote about the movie "who wants to be the millionaire". And today, we also finished the cultural characteristics. Religion is really an important factor cause different cultural.

class on Dec. 3

Today's class, we talked about religion on Cultural Geography. Religion can always be both a unifying force. There are five major religions in the world today---- Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Religion can also be a dividing force around the world. Hindus and Muslins fight in India(Hindu) and Pakistan(Muslin) There are conflict between Catholic and Protestants(two forms of Christianity) in Northern Ireland.

Today's class, we talked about Cultural Geography, cultural characteristics are parts of a group's everyday life. Ideas and themes teach all members. There are some examples of Cultural Geography those are language, religion, and ethnic heritage.
And then, we talked about some countries as the examples of language in Cultural Geography such as Brazil, Canada, Switzerland, and United States. Ethnic heritage means a country contains a lot of kind of ethnic people, for example, China, there are 56 ethnic people in total living in China.

Class on 11/21

Yesterday's class, we still focused on the movie " Slum Dog Millionaire". This is a great movie, the main character Jamal is a boy which has no parents, but fortunately, he has a friend, who helped him a lot and solved a lot of troubles together. They have sent to a place which they thought can learn dance and sing there. However, this place just injure the kids as beggars to make money, these two kids notice that and flee there, they have a lot of experiences that can help Jamal to answer the questions and finally, he won the whole money of the TV show.

Human Geo on 11/20

Today's class, we focused on the movie, this movie is talking about a low educated boy's experience. He attempted a famous TV program. On this program, the host will ask you some difficult questions, you have three chances to ask for help, such as 50:50; ask the viewers; and make a phone call, finally, he got all right, this is amazing because a lot of doctors, and high educated people cannot even get all right. So the polices there think that he is cheating, but actually, he has a lot of experiences of these questions. In my opinion, Mr. Schick shares this movie to us in order to help us to understand cultural characteristic better. And this is really good.

Class on 11/19

Today's class, I went through my first formal swimming meeting with another school's swimming team. This game is really cool, although we cannot say that we won the game, but everyone tried their best and they are all the best one in my eyes, I will also try to practice harder and get the better result next time.

Tuesday, November 18, 2014

Human Geo on 11/18

Today's class, we talked about the Cultural Characteristic. Cultural Characteristic are parts of a groups everyday life. They are the ideas and themes which the group will teach to all members. These same characteristics can also link or divide a region. And we also learned the map about soft drinks in each of the counties of the United States as an example, this helped us to understand cultural characteristics better. There are also some examples of cultural characteristic, there would be language, religion and ethnic heritage.

Syria's anthem

Guardians of the Homeland

Guardians of homeland, upon you be peace,
our ever-proud souls refuse to be seized.
The den of Arabism is our sacred home,
and the throne of our suns will never go down.

The mountains of Syria are towers in height,
which talk with the zenith of the highest skies.
A land that is splendid with brilliant sun,
turning to a sky or almost a sky.

The flutter of our hopes and the beats of our hearts,
depicted on the flag that united our land.
Did we not derive the black from every man's eye,
and from ink of martyr's blood wrote to the tall sky?

Spirits defiant and past so glorious,
and the martyrs' souls are our guardians.
"Walid" is from us and so is "Rashid",
so why won't we prosper and why wouldn't we build?

Translation by: Muhaned Elhindi

The anthem of Syria  majestic, it shows us that citizens of Syria have a great dream, keep the war away, they want to hand together to resist the wars, they want peace, they still believe their country that can make them happiness.

class on 11/13

Today's class, we took a big test, which valued 100 scores, it is really important for me, because last time, I didn't get a high grade on Human Geography, from now on, I will work harder and try my best to make all my class above 90, I will try my best to achieve that.

Wednesday, November 12, 2014

class on 11/12

Today's class, we just focus on the review of the test tomorrow, and tonight, I study for the test tomorrow with John and Ryan till 11 o'clock. I hope that I can get a great score tomorrow. By the way, the information about twelve countries are really confused me, it's so difficult to remember all of them clearly in one night, but I will still try my best tomorrow.

Human Geo on 11/11

Today's class, we finished all presentations. The last three countries are Israel, Mexico and Brazil.
First of all, Israel, Parliamentary Democracy, President: Binyamin Netanyahu(nickname: BB).  7 year term, one term is maximum, president is elected by the Knesset.Israelis the home for Jews.
And secondly, Mexico, it is Federal government, it has a federal republic government since 1823 and the term of president is six year, one term is maximum. An interesting fact about Mexico is that teachers in Mexico are trying to shut down the government because Mexico has the ineffective educational system.
Finally, Brazil, it is Federal republic, and the term of president is 4 year, but they can re-elected two times in a row.  Most of people in Brazil are happy about their president and the government. That is a good news.

Human Geo on 11/7

Yesterday's class we talked about China and Russia. There are some facts about Russia that is:
people in Russia have two groups, one is really like Put in and another one os really hate him. That is a big difference between Russia and other countries. And about China, because I'm Chinese, so I know some interesting events about China such as the Tiananmen Square's protest and the interesting facts about the president of China, Xi Jinping and even his wife. Maybe next week, I will do my presentation with David.

Thursday, November 6, 2014

Human Geo on 11/6

Today's class, we talked about Germany and Japan. Germany is a federal republic, which means the president has the majority power of this country. And Japan, to be honest, I don't like this country as others, maybe because of the history or something else. Some facts about Japan: Japan's president has no limits on time. Which means they can stay on the seat until they don't want anymore. That's interesting. Tomorrow, is the last day of the week, I still need to prepare for the presentation.

Wednesday, November 5, 2014

Human Geo on 11/5

Today's class we had two groups to volunteer to present first, their presentation is really great, I also learnt a lot from their slides. Such as France has five republic, this country is federal republic, and was an empire before 1958(maybe is 1948, I cannot remember that because I forget to bring my notebook back). And United  Kingdom has a Queen. This is an important information and the biggest different from other countries. I hope that tomorrow's presentation can be better.

Tuesday, November 4, 2014

Human Geo on 11/4

Today's class, we did the last change on our slides about the specific country which we have chosen before. And tomorrow, we will have our presentation on class, I need to search more information about Syria and prepare for the presentation tomorrow. I will try my best to assist David to explain about what happened in Syria and try to get a higher score.

Human Geo on 10 30

Today's class, we still work on the certain country we chose, this time I know that Syria is the country which republic under an authoritarian regime. This country independence on 17 April 1946. It has mixed legal system of civil and Islamic law. Their military is also free Syrian Army. And tomorrow is Halloween, we will make a lot of fun on the activities. I'm so excited now.

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

Human Geo on Oct 29

Today's class, we still working on the specific country which you chose before. But my partner Paj is not here today, so I just did a little bit but Syria. This country is really interesting, the president, the government, even the army is also interest me. I will continue working on that.

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

Today's Human Geo

Today's class, my nose bleed, it is an emergence, so I can just take a tissue to the class. It is a interesting experience. Today's class, we focused on one country which we are interested in. Paj is the group with me. And we chose Syria. It is an interring country. Full of mystical, we made a powerpoint about Syria. It is not bad I promise.

Human Geo on Oct 26

Today's class, we took a quiz, but we didn't ready for the quiz, because we even didn't know about the quiz. This time, my score is not that good, when I see the paper, I couldn't believe my eyes. this quiz is about the presidents of 12 countries. That is not difficult but I need to review that. It's my bad, I didn't respect this assignment, but just search some information and copy that. I will never do that again.

The informations about the presidents of these countries

China: Xi Jinping. His father, Xi Zhongxun (1913–2002), was a Communist revolutionary figure. In May 1966, Xi's secondary education was cut short by the Cultural Revelution, when all secondary classes were halted for students to criticise and fight their teachers. Xi was 15 when his father was jailed in 1968 during the Cultural Revolution.

Russia: Putin. Two elder brothers, Viktor and Albert, were born in the mid-1930s; Albert died within a few months of birth, while Viktor succumbed to diphtheria during the siege of Leningrad in World War II. Putin's paternal grandfather, Spiridon Ivanovich Putin (1879–1965), was a chef who at one time or another cooked for Vlanmir Lenin

Brazil: Dilma Rousseff. According to Apolo Heringer, who was the leader of Colina in 1968 and taught Marxism to Rousseff in high school, she chose the armed struggle after reading Revolution inside the Revolution by Regis Derby, a French intellectual who had moved to Cuba and became a friend of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara

Canada: Stephen Harper. Harper became involved in politics as a member of his high school's Young Liberal Club. He later changed his political allegiance because he disagreed with theNational energy program (NEP) of Pierre Trudeal's Liberal government. He became chief aide to Progressively Conservative MP Jim Hawkes in 1985, but later became disillusioned with both the party and the government of Brain Mulroney.

Germany: Joachim Gauck. His father was an experienced ship's captain and distinguished naval officer (Captain of sea ), who after World War II worked as an inspector at the Nepton Werft shipbuilding company. Both of his parents were Nazi Party members.

France: François Hollande. Hollande was raised Catholic but is now an atheistAfter volunteering as a student to work for Hollande's ultimately unsuccessful campaign in the 1974  presidential election, Hollande joined the Socialist Party five years later.

India: Pranab Mukherjee. Mukherjee became a Gandhi loyalist, and is often described as her "man for all seasons". Mukherjee's rise was rapid in the early phase of his career and he was appointed Union Deputy Minister of Industrial Development in Indira Gandhi's cabinet in 1973. Mukherjee was active in the Indian cabinet during the controversial Internal Emergency of 1975–77.

Israel: Reuven Rivlin. During his term as speaker, he was criticized for breaking the tradition of political neutrality of the post; he was one of Ariel  Sharon's harshest critics regarding the disengagement plan.

Japan: Shinzō Abe. He studied political science at Seikei University, graduating in 1977. He later moved to the United States and studied public policy at the University of Southern California's School of Public Policy. In April 1979, Abe began working for Kobe Steel. He left the company in 1982 and pursued a number of government positions including executive assistant to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, private secretary to the chairperson of the LDP General Council, and private secretary to the LDP secretary-general.

Syria: Bashar al-Assad: Bashar al-Assad initially showed little interest in politics. He graduated from medical school and moving to London to study ophthalmology in his twenties.

United Kingdom: David Cameron.  Cameron lost to Jonathan Hill, who was appointed in March 1992. He was given the responsibility for briefing Major for his press conferences during the 1992 general election.During the campaign, Cameron was one of the young "brat pack" of party strategists who worked between 12 and 20 hours a day, sleeping in the house of Alan Duncan in Gayfere StreetWestminster.

Mexico: Enrique Peña Nieto. Upon graduating as a lawyer from the Universidad Panamericana, Peña Nieto sought a Master's degree in the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, based in the State of Mexico. Human Geo on Oct 16

Today's class, we reviewed the test, actually it is not too difficult, but I didn't get the higher score. I should read carefully and read slowly, thus I can get higher this time. I also know how to search the world's facts in CIA fact book today. I will still work hard and try to make higher grades next time.

Tuesday, October 14, 2014

Finally, I get a great score this test, from 55 to 95, its not very hard for me actually. I just sometimes review and practise more. And then I get this score. I will continue to work harder and try to make higher score next time.

Human Geo on Oct 10

Today, we took a test about Population and immigration, I think this time I can get a not bad score, because I know most of these answers. It's not too difficult, but before I get my real score, I cannot say too much. Because.... if I get a terrible grade again... I hope not. God bless me, I really tried my best.

Thursday, October 9, 2014

Today's Human Geo

Tomorrow, we have an important test, it worth 100 scores, which means if I get a great score in this test, I can totally increase my grades in Human Geography. Last time, I get a terrible score, because I didn't work very hard before. But this time, I feel still very nervous, I lost my confident after that time. I just want to say I will try my best. Tomorrow is also Friday, it's the best news today. This time, we talked about total fertility rate, which means how many kids per woman. And also about the increase or decrease population. Of the whole world, every family should get 2.1 kids. Because at this time, the crude death rate is less than crude birth rate. So that's it. God bless me, let me get a great score tomorrow.

Wednesday, October 8, 2014

Today's class, Mr. Schick helped us to reviewed some words we mentioned before. Life expectancy: in a country or an area, the average age of people they can live. Crude birth rate: the number of born in per 1000 people in the same year. Crude death rate: the number of death in per 1000 people in the same year. Developed country: means country which has already developed well. Developing country: means country which is still developing. Rate of nature increase: The difference between crude birth rate and crude death rate. Immigration: number of people who come into the country. Emigration: number of people who leave the country. Net migration rate: number of people who come or leave a country in a year.

Today's human Geo

Today's Human Geo, Mr. Schick lets us find the country which we think is the greatest country in the world on CIA factbook. First of all, I looked at China, because I'm Chinese, and I'm proud of my country, so I looked at China first. However, my country is not that good. And then, I looked at United States, This country is the best country in the world I think. And also, a lot of  data shows that this country is really great. Such as the oil reproduction and import amount is always the first in the world. And then.... I was so tired this morning, so I want to have a rest for a couple of minutes. I just want to bend over a desk but eyes open. But I don't know when I closed my eyes.... I'm so sort Mr. Schick. I just too tired but not because your class. And thank you that you didn't wake me up. Because of the couple of minutes. I become better later.

Human Geo on Oct 3

Yesterday's class is the greatest class I have seen ever. In China, it is impossible to have class like this. Teacher set a topic and the students start to argue. And yesterday, our topic is: should United States send troops to other countries? And we had two sides, one is: US should send troops to other country and make some wars, because that can let others respect to them. The the other side is: US cannot send troops because we need peace. On my opinion, I think we shouldn't send troops to other countries, although your purpose is protect them. Let's think about this, if Russia sends some militaries to US, and they want to protect us, we will become very nervous, because we cannot control them, and we need to worry about if they sneak attack us. There is no country in the world want other countries' troop to protect them. And also, if you send some troops to attack some countries, they won't give up their control, but try their best to protect themselves such as nuke. That is not good for us, and we may start the  World War III, we cannot do that. That is my opinion on this topic.

CIA factbook

There is an amazing website named CIA Factbook. We can search almost everything about any country in our Earth. Such as the biggest country Russia and the smallest country Pitcairn Island. The strongest country United States and the country which has the biggest number of population China. Today, we focused on the CIA Factbook and search any country which you are interested in. I am interested in the Pitcairn Island, it is located on the South Pacific Ocean. There are only 47 people living in the island. There is no port and airport. So even the CIA Factbook has not too much information about this country as other countries. And also, I like UAE, maybe you are not familiar to this name, but you must know Dubai, one of the most famous countries in the world. It located in a desert in Middle  East.

New month, New manner, New life

Today is Oct 1st, we just focused on a great App named Spotify, actually, before these days, I always want to find an App for my mac which can play some music, but I didn't find it. Today, we got this, although I don't know what is this App for our Human Geo class. But I know that it is good for me. I love this App

Population Pyramid

Population pyramid is a graph which can show show us about the rate of male and female. Let me take an example, the African countries, most of countries of Africa have the highest rate of males and females. Especially the base of the population pyramid is very wide, because there are too many babies in African countries. there are almost three to four children per family. It can not show us the death rate and the born rate, but just at this time the number of each period population. And also, there are a lot  of pre-industriy from economy, which means these countries just machining some basic materials, that is cheap and no much profit. However, there are some countries such as US has the post-industry from economy, this kind of economy can make the highest profit by the easier way. Like Apple company and Microsoft.

About the CIA Facts which we mentioned on the class.

First of all, I want to mentioned is about a small island which is just 3/10 of Washington D.C. And the name of the small island is Pitcairn island. It is too small that there's no transformation issue, and military.Secondly, we talked about Syria, which happened a lot of wars there these year. there are almost 113 people per 1000 want to escape from this country. On the contrary, there is a country named Lebanon which has the highest immigration rate which is higher than 83. that is an amazing number. Because China's immigration rate is just -0.32. And the intersting thing is that Lebanon is just near Syria. That's shocked me.

Today's human geo

Today's class, a got my paper of last test, a terrible score.... Anyway, I will work harder from now on. Today's class, we focused on two topics, about Socrate's death and trail, and another one is globalisation. First of all, about Socrate's death, he never chose to escape from Greek because of his strong sense of responsibility. Finally, he chose to die in Greek. He encouraged his student to think to consider things freely, to break through the block from the local government. And his two crimes are1. debag from the God's mind which  the local government stated. And2. he eroded students' mind, their thinking. And about the globalisation, Cody said that John, Ryan and me are the symbol of globalisation, we from some different countries and there are some different cultures in our mind, but we still gather together to attend the class. That means globalisation. Also, a long time ago, Mr. Miller took some students of our school to Russia as the exchange students. That is also means globalisation.

The special day

Today is difference day from other days, John, Ryan and me didn't have class because of the Freshman Retreat.  To be honest, the freshman retreat is a little boring, we just sit together, and some juniors share their experiences about the school, about how to study better and how to learn effectively. But there are also a lot of funny parts. Such as we gather together with a big circle. And when the people who stand in the centre, he will say some qualification, and if you have one of these qualification, you should try your best to change your seat with others. Anyway, the freshman retreat just one purpose, that is to warm up with other students and ice break. We all enjoy the free day today.

Human Geo (about the population)

Nowadays, the social population become a serious problem, we have almost 20,100 babies born per day. And we already have more than 7 billion of people in the world. That is a really huge number! However, more and more countries like China state a raw which is limit the reproduction of families. Such as one family can just at most get one children. Up to this, our population increase of the world can get slower. But India has not a effective raw about the population, so the rate of indian population increase get faster than China. But we need to limit our population up rate.

Human Geo on Sep 18

After yesterday's test of unit 1, we began unit 2 today. A new chapter, a new feeling. Today's class, we talked about the population and the settlements. We have already 7 billion people on our earth. It is an amazing number. However, there are 1.3 billion of people in China! almost the 1/5! but the area of China is just a small portion of the earth. And also, there are almost 20,000 people has born every day, that is a large number. and 140 per minute, that is so interesting. A long time ago, people used almost 10,004 years to increase 1 billion of people, however, nowadays, we just need 12 years to increase the same amount! That's crazy.

About our first test in Human Geo

By the way, I'm so tired today, because I have four tests just on one day. That is so strange, when I back to the dorm, I slept very deep even I didm't hear the supervisor knocked my door. That is my feel to today's test, I swear, I will get the score on this course at least 90, trust me, I can make it.

Today's Human Geo

Today's human geography is different from normal, because Mr. Schick didm't here, he was going to attend a meeting. So, Mr. Meyerl substitute Mr. Schick to teach. Actually, Mr. Meyerl assigned some works for us which we need to finish in class, that is on a website which named "quizlet" and create some new sets of the difficult words set and then test ourselves. It is very important because it is prepare for our test tomorrow. All of us in the class are nervous,so we all focused on it but not to play, to waste our time. We hope that we can get a great score tomorrow.

Today's Human Geo

This class, we talked about the globalisation, as the time goes on,  our world become smaller and smaller, so the globalisation become much more famous. Let me take some examples, McDonald's, the most famous fast food in the world today. However, 50 years ago, McDonald's just came into existence, that is not famous that time, but as the time goes, McDonald's come into the world and become much more famous than it just begin. And the same samples are also the KFC(Kentucky fried chicken), Burger King, etc. These companies could become popular just because of the globalisation. And also, like the Silk Road in ancient China, it is also the beginning of the globalisation. Thus, we can all see that the globalisation is very important for us, for our world.

Today's Human Geo

Today is Thursday again, time really run fast, tomorrow has a test which I afraid about, that's Biology, I'm really bad at Biology, especially in America, I don't even know which everything means.  Anyway, today's Human Geography Mr. Schick talked about which fact in yesterday's video is your favourite. To me, I think the fact about India is interesting, it says in India, there are almost 25% kids have the highest IQ, the amount of these kids are more than all of the American kids. That is so amazing! At the first time, I just thought that India kids are much smart than kids in America, after a while, I understood, that's because India has so many people, that is why so many kids have the highest IQ. And also, in the class, we talked about Apple company. It is so big that much more than any other companies. It is also shocked me. Amazing facts, amazing class.

The class of Human Geo

Today's class, we focused on a short video which called "Did you know?". This video include a lot of facts in the world which I never heard before. That is amazing! Let me take some examples in the video. Like China will have most English speakers country in the world. And also, Indian has almost 25% kids who has the highest IQ born everyday. It is more than the all amount of kids in America. If people who use Facebook is in one country, it will be the third country which has the most population, just after China and India. There are so many amazing fact in this short video, I cannot believe my eyes when I watch that. Tat is so interesting for me.

The ninth class in Human Geo

In the class, Mr schick helped us to review some word which we mentioned last class. To be honest, these words are little bit difficult for us without searching the Internet. However, through this time, I could understand much more deeper than before. And also, in this time, we focused on a statement: an unexamined life is not worth living. That is true I think. For example, if we have not a try out, everyone can join the soccer ball team, so we cannot find the best player for our team. And also, if we have not a final exam, we will have no power to learn because everyone can go to collage without study hard. So I agree with the statement.

The eighth Human geography class

The time is always running so fast when we are enjoying, this is my eighth lass of Human Geography. Today we talked about some of the slangs of ancient Greek. That is interesting but also a little difficult for me. And also, Mr Schick, I like your music in thursday morning. That can encourage us and wake us up from sleepy. Some of my friends said that you are the kindest teacher in John Carroll, from your music and your class, I found it. That's true.

A message to Gacia

Gacia , a General of America in Cuban War. Cuba was one of the most  dangerous countries at that time. And American faced some troubles that time, they need to tell the General named Gacia. He was the general who stayed in rain forest, his support was very important to America. But nobody know about his location even the highest commander of America. At this time, someone recommended Rowan to the commander, because he thought that Rowan is good at finding something. Then, the president adopted his advice, and ordered Rowan to find General Gacia and give him the letter. This is very important so that Rowan took it without thinking and either didn't ask where is him. Finally, Rowan  took three weeks and found General Gacia through the dangerous country by himself. He's so valiant that just think about how to finish the order better but don't think too much about the troubles he will face. He is one of the most brave warriors in the world. We all need to learn from.

Five ways to ensure that I can get a successful and excellent freshmen year

Five ways to ensure that I can get a successful and excellent freshmen year

If I want to study and do better in John Carroll, I need to do at least five things.
First of all, I need to make more local friends, I need to be confident, and open. If they need help, I      need to help them at first if I can. Thus, I will never feel lonely at John Carroll. And at the same time,   I can practice myself and build a stronger body.  Secondly, I need to join at least one club at John Carroll, because this is the easiest way to become popular. Third, I need to try my best to finish the homework and classwork better, and never update the home not on time. Fourthly, I need to learn English better, it is the basic foundation to make friends, and to learn better. Finally, we need to fit into the study and life environment as fast as we can. Basic to these ways, we can do better in John Carroll.

My first day in John Carroll Mr. Schick

It’s a pretty nice day today,and also,it is the first day I study in John Carroll. There is a great environment here for study. All the students here are friendly and helpful, we can ask everyone if you face a trouble,they will always try their best to answer you and make sure that you got it. For example,today I lost my way at school and I don’t know where everything is,just a lot of students around me,so I asked one of them and then he took me to my classroom. He’s so nice and I am so appreciate that I have the classmates like him.Teachers in John Carroll are so humorous and kind. they will sometime makes you laugh at class and they always take a smile on their face. That makes me feel comfortable and confident. Before I coming to America,I always worried about how to makes friends with students here. But today,I get the answer,that is so easy to make friend with them. Even most of the time they hug me first. I’m so happy that I chose John Carroll for my high school life. The great begging is the half done,I believe that I will do wellin John Carroll.
